As a parent, you know your child best, but sometimes it is hard to decipher why they have difficulties in some areas but excel in others. You may have asked yourself “why is my child angry, frustrated, overwhelmed?”. A comprehensive neuropsychological evolution provides a clear picture of how your child processes the information of the world around them, how they think and learn, how they attend to information, and how they store and retrieve information from their memory. The purpose of a good child neuropsychological evaluation is to help identify and celebrate your child’s strengths, while at the same time identifying which areas need extra help.
As children grow and develop, we encourage them to adapt, learn, socialize, and thrive, but success in these areas is usually not constant or guaranteed. The vast majority of children will show signs of difficulty in one or more areas. Some children will overcome these challenges, while others will need some help. A neuropsychological evaluation will provide insight as to what these challenges are.
Why is it important to understand your child’s difficulties? Knowing what they struggle with provides an opportunity to act quickly, as well as provide them with specific tools and remediation to help them. Although we would like our child to excel in all areas equally, the reality is that all of us have at least a few areas of weakness, whether it be related to sustaining attention at a meeting, forgetting meeting times, problems recalling colleagues’ names, attention to detail, socializing at a networking meeting, managing finances, etc. Some of us learn how to adapt and compensate for these areas of difficulty after years of struggling and trial and errors. However, when they are addressed promptly, they have less of an opportunity to make a negative impact on a person’s life. Prompt intervention allows for higher probability of success and growth, thus promoting self-confidence.
